Serenity Headphones Leap forward in July

July has brought about some major progress for the Serenity Headphones, especially locally.  When the Surgical Serenity Headphones were first created, the greatest response came from the West Coast and the East Coast big cities.  I think that is how new technology in healing and in medicine usually work.

The very first major hospitals that expressed an interest were Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic, both powerhouses of medical research and medical technology advances.

Our first official research study on the headphones came from the VA system, starting with our Veteran's Hospital here in Louisville, Kentucky.  As of this past Monday, three new major business and entrepreneurial and healthcare executives have become aware of our headphones and are actively helping to move them forward through new marketing efforts and new clinical trials.

“Music May Help Soothe Surgery Pain” says WebMD

April 21, 2006 — After surgery, patients may feel less pain and need less pain medicine if they listen to music, according to a new research review.
The review appears in The Cochrane Library. It shows that patients who listened to music after surgery tended to report less pain intensity and required slightly smaller doses of painkillers, compared with those who didn’t listen to music.

“Music should not be considered as a primary method for pain relief,” the researchers write. However, they note that music may easily, inexpensively, and safely help cut surgery patients’ pain and painkiller needs.

We have pulled together 23 songs.

We sat down at a beautiful Steinway Grand Piano and recorded the 23 most commonly requested songs as we have entertained the elderly. The beautiful sound of a Steinway Concert Grand comes through in these simple piano songs. The recordings allow the listener to revisit their past, generate discussions between listeners, or sing along. The recordings are instrumental only as to engage the listener’s mind and have them bring up the words or lyrics they remember.  This CD is always a hit with the Grandparents!

Music for Memory Care

Thirty days ago I accepted a challenge to create a new blog post each day during June for my Surgery and Music Blog.  Since getting the word out about the exciting benefits of music with surgery is one of my main missions these days, I excitedly accepted the challenge. 

Having surgery is one of those serious and often terrifying live events and people want to know what they can do to make it as safe as possible and to get through it with as little trauma and side-effects as possible.

Today, drum circles are being created all over the world, often for the very same reasons.  Drumming circles in hospitals, schools and universities are happening daily and participants are realizing all that they have to gain from their willingness to try something a little different.

On Tuesday, August 2nd, at 11:00 o'clock a.m. Alice and Heidi will be conducting a drum circle on the University of Louisville, Health Sciences Campus.  This is part of a summer program called "Take 20 for Relaxation."  Please join us for this free program.  If you have a drum or other percussion instrument, please bring it!
