Music for Alzheimer's Patients

Alzheimer's patients have  been using music to help with memory care for many decades now. Alzheimer's patients especially, respond to the music of their courting years.  Music brings smiles to their faces, songs to their lips, and healing to their minds and bodies.  Both well elderly and frail elderly often respond to music of their era, when nothing else seems to affect them.

Patients with Alzheimer's or other dementias often begin to smile, sing along, tap their toes or nod their heads when favorite music is played.  The memories that are retrieved by this music bring happiness and a few moments of feeling connected with friends and family.  Some patients have actually been know to get up and start dancing!

Caregivers report that after a music session or a music therapy session, Alzheimer's patients eat better, sleep better and are less combative.  Caregivers say that they enjoy the music too and often feel calmer after a live or a CD music therapy session.  For this reason, researchers have been investigating the psycho-physiological benefits of music for Alzheimer's patients and all of the studies show many numerous benefits, ranging from less anxiety, depression and combativeness to improved immune system, improved social skills and less need for medications for sleep and anxiety!

Dr. Cash has conducted clinical research on the use of music with Alzheimer's patients, documenting the fact that, even when other awareness of family and friends are gone, many patients can still hear and recognize the music of their "courting Years."  For this reason, Dr. Cash has recorded over 20 tracks of music from the late 1890's through the 1930's.  Even if this music isn't from your courting years, you'll probably recognize many of the old favorites.  This CD will be enjoyed by anyone looking for some relaxing piano music, performed by a concert pianist.

"Dr. Cash, thank you so much for your wonderful piano renditions of these old favorite songs!  My 93 year old father listens to it every day and says he'd like to have more like this!  You have brought him hours and hours of enjoyment, relaxation, and pure pleasure.  He says it's the best gift he's gotten in a long time!"  Paula Berry, Ph.D., Louisville, KY.

"Alice, I can't tell you how much all of our patients here love your CD and ask for it every day!  Sometimes they'll take turns standing up and soloing on different ones like "Ain't She Sweet" or "Jeepers, Creepers."  It makes my work easier and the day goes faster...I do hope you'll make more like this one...we love it!  Nonie Hudnall, Spartanburg, S.C.
