Editorial Musings:
Kansas City and the Firechiefs Conference

Late last month I had the honor of traveling to Kansas City to speak at the International Fire Chiefs Convention. What an experience that was! After the excitement and thrill of presenting my workshop to the Partners Program on Saturday afternoon, I had the privilege of sitting on a panel discussion for the better part of Sunday afternoon. The panel had people such as Dr. Grady Bray of the NYC Fire Department who is a fire chief and also a psychologist. He talked about the rescue work and the counseling that they did with survivors and families of survivors. We also had a fire chief from Southern California and his wife who was a flight attendant for United Airlines. Neither was working on September 11th last year, but about 5 months later, their 10 year old daughter had a "psychological meltdown" (their description) and begged both parents to change professions. Her mother was able to stop working entirely, but her father is still a firefighter. We also had the fire chief from Arlington, VA who was in charge of going to the September 11th Pentagon attack and coordinating the fire and rescue efforts there. In addition to myself, we also had Dan Clark, a well-known speaker and author of many of the Chicken Soup for the Soul books who talked about courage and teamwork in times of crisis. I, of course, talked about how music has helped many people to survive 9/11 and how music has strengthened our country and brought people together in a way that crosses all parties and all class, color and superficial boundary lines. It was a powerful and empowering conference for me and I felt honored to have been invited.

III.ii. New Audiotapes!

This month we have two new tape sets to offer: a) Music for Surgery and b) Music for Alzheimers and Dementia Patients. People have been waiting patiently for the surgery tapes and I am thrilled to announce that they are finally out! This is a two-tape set, one of which is an interview with me by Dr. Crystal Sahner and contains all of the questions and answer I usually get at my workshops about why music is so important to have before, during and after surgery, what the research has found, and how to use the music and talk to your doctor about it. The second tape is the music itself with me playing pieces from the Baroque era and my own arrangement of "The Gift to be Simple."

Special Topic:
What makes Music so Powerful?

What makes music so powerful? That is a huge question that cannot be answered in the space we have here, but because it is something that is asked in a variety of ways so often, I thought I'd take a crack at it again. First of all, let's look at some familiar situations in which music is powerful and makes a lasting impression:

1. Music from your "first love"
2. Lullabies your mother sang
3. Music at graduation
4. Music at your wedding
5. Songs you sang in kindergarten
6. Music you put on to exercise by
7. Songs you learned in Sunday School
8. Your favorite relaxation music now

How do you know what to choose? Why do different people like diverse music but there are a few things that most everyone seems to like and feel positively about? Well, I'm throwing out lots of questions but can you think of what some of the answers might be? Of course there are no definitive answers here. Some or much of it is truly educated speculation. I believe that much of our love and enjoyment of a specific piece of music comes from the associations that we make with that piece of music. Certain pieces, in our culture, have nearly 100% positive association: "Happy Birthday to You," "Pomp and Circumstance" (the piece played at graduations) "Jingle Bells" "Jesus Loves Me" (for Christians) "I Want to Hold Your Hand" (for Baby Boomers), etc., etc.

Other songs or pieces are more individual, depending on where you were raised and what your family's musical preferences were. After that, music has its power on us based on all kinds of other factors ranging from the tempo of the piece, the instruments used, the volume (loud or soft) of the music, and just the mood we're in when we hear the music start. There are also the intrinsic physiological and brain-emotional effects that music has on us, without our realization, most of the time. In other words, there are multiple factors. You can read more about this phenomenon on my web site and also in my book "Notes on Tuning Your Life with Music."
