Highlights of the Music Therapy Conference

My trip to the American Music Therapy Conference in Jacksonville was a huge hit!  Not only did I finally get to meet so many music therapists that I had corresponded with for years, but never met, such as Brian Abrams and Kat Fulton, I also visited with some of my favorite music therapists from other parts of the country that I've met, but don't get to see very often, such as Deforia Lane, Lisa Jackert, Barbara Wheeler and Ellen Ritchey!

The sessions there were all really good, but my favorite one was the one that Deforia Lane presented on her research with music therapy and breast biopsies.  It was a fascinating study, utilizing both live music or recorded music and then a possibility of no music, depending on the randomization of subjects.  It was a great presentation with video and funny stories as well as touching stories.  Deforia is simply a master story-teller.

In the course of these three days, one of the most exciting occurrences was my introduction to a man from California who is president of a major recording company in Los Angeles.  This gentleman is working with a music therapist on a "wellness/insomnia app."  We are talking with him about using the application on our cordless, programmable headphones.  Because he works in the music industry, he has access to a large library of existing music in dozens of genres.  Nothing has been finalized but the possibilities are very exciting!

While there, I also had some promising conversations with a music therapist from Nashville who is interested in becoming head of new music acquisition, which is the original music that we are commissioning from composers around the world.  There are many exciting activities going on now in our two branches, Healing Music Enterprises and Surgical Serenity Solutions.  Stay tuned!

Surgical Serenity Solutions featured in Local Magazine

TodaysWoman.2013 One of the challenges that we musicians, music therapists, and clinical musicologists have is publicity. In the past, unless one had a very healthy marketing and advertising budget, it was just not possible to let the world know what all of the possibilities were for healing with music, how music affects the brain, and the tremendous benefits of music with surgery. Now, much of that has changed!

With the internet and the world wide web, we now have the possibility of electronic magazines (ezines), blogs, Facebook, Twitter and so much more. All of these are basically free, but there is just a little bit of a learning curve. Thanks to all of the new “social media” options, millions more people are now aware of the healing power of music. And this week, out came one more great article about the Surgical Serenity Solution. http://issuu.com/todayswoman.com/

Would love to get your comments and questions after ready this! Thanks!

Robert Gupta talks about music as medicine

By now ou have heard me say hundreds of times that music is medicine, good, powerful, healing and non-addictive. The awareness that music is a type, a form, of medicine is ancient. The Greeks and Romans knew about the power of music; the Bible talks about the power of music over and over. The story of little David, playing on his harp for the depressed and morose King Saul is one of the all-time favorite Bible stories for me.

Now you’ve probably also heard of the “Ted Talks.” These are fascinating lectures, from every possible discipline, covering everything from practical advice about what to do if you are having a stroke, to the most visionary and imaginative concepts known to humans. In this post, I want to share with you an excerpt from a “Ted Talk” by L.A. Philharmonic violinist, Robert Gupta. Robert Gupta, violinist with the LA Philharmonic, talks about a violin lesson he once gave to a brilliant, schizophrenic musician — and what he learned. Called back onstage later, Gupta plays his own transcription of the prelude from Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1.

Violinist Robert Gupta joined the LA Philharmonic at the age of 19 — and maintains a passionate parallel interest in neurobiology and mental health issues. He’s a TED Senior Fellow.

    Brain and Music Blog

Have you ever had a Tune stuck in your brain?

Almost everybody that I talk to about music and the brain tells me that at some point in their life they have had a serious problem with a tune stuck in their brain. You know what I’m talking about? You hear an old favorite on the radio or something jogs your memory and suddenly you start playing this song over and over and over in your brain. The problem is, even after you want it to stop, it won’t stop! Now that is maddening!

Recently, I got a beautiful hymn from my childhood, stuck in my brain. I grew up in the United Methodist Church in the Deep South, and loved this hymn. The older I get, the more precious these hymns from my childhood become. Here is a wonderful YouTube recording of this beautiful hymn. Hopefully, it won’t turn into an “earworm” for you!
