Surgical Serenity with Dental Procedures

Every day people excitedly tell me about other uses that they have thought of for our Serenity  Headphones.  One of the most frequently heard suggestions outside of a hospital is dental surgery or dental work.  If you've tried to make a dental appointment recently, you know how busy dentists are!  In addition to the usual fillings, crowns, and root canals, there is a huge boom in cosmetic dentistry and it is not painless.

We have not aggressively marketed the headphones to dental surgeons or dentists of any kind, but recently lots of customers have bought the headphones to use during a dental procedure of one kind or another.

"The first time around, during my dental procedure, I did not have the headphones and it was the most uncomfortable hour of my life!"  The second time, I had the headphones and it was a totally different experience.  This time, I could focus on the relaxing, healing music, and not on when the dentist would start drilling again.  It was great too, because I could still hear the dentist when he asked me a question.  I would definitely recommend these to my friends, or anyone having dental work of any kind!"   Suzanne Bergmeister

Suzanne volunteered to give me a video testimonial and I was thrilled with what she had to say.  Be sure to click on the link below to listen to it!

Healing Music or Music Healing
Music is healing!  To the mind, the body and the spirit.  Almost everyone on the planet has some sort of music that they really, really love and choose to listen to!  But is it the music itself that heals and soothes, or is it about the person performing it, or is it the method of delivery, i.e. live, ambient (recorded and played through speakers in the room) or through headphones?

For almost 25 years I have been researching, performing and writing about healing music.  I have always believed that a live performance is the most healing.  For people who are willing to try vocal toning, or drumming or playing an instrument, this is best.  After that, a live performance is best.  My music medicine mentors, Arthur Harvey, Don Campbell, and Alfred Tomatis taught me that the intention behind a live performance is a key to its effectiveness.  Unfortunately, a live performance is not always possible.  For me, the next best thing is a recording of acoustic healing music through high quality headphones.

The piece of music I am playing in this YouTube video is one of my favorite pieces of healing music.  J.S. Bach did not characterize this piece as ďhealing music,Ē but I think if he were here today he would agree.  What do YOU think?

Fear of Surgery and Anesthesia:  Is it realistic?

In the year 2013, hasnít most of the danger of surgery and anesthesia been eradicated?  Well, I donít want to discourage you from having needed surgery because the vast majority of procedures go as planned and improve the quality of life immeasurably for that patient.  But just how wrong can things go?

I donít need to recount the horror stories of surgeries gone bad from all kinds of mistakes, but youíve heard them.  I believe that things have improved over the last few years but occasionally we still hear of the wrong limb being operated on or even removed.  We still hear of sponges being sewn up in patients, all things that could be prevented.

What canít be prevented is bad reactions to anesthesia or pain medication in people who have never had surgery or had medical treatment at all.  Here is when using music can be particularly helpful by supplementing the relaxation effect and decreasing the need for as much anesthesia or pain medication.  Why wouldnít a person use music?  Well, there are a few that I can think of:

  • They donít know about how powerful music can be in surgery
  • They donít realize that they can buy pre-programmed headphones for surgery
  • And thatís about it!

If you have been told that you need any kind of surgery at all, including dental surgery, please plan to use music.  Either your own favorite music through an iPod, or the pre-programmed headphones will give you a more positive experience and outcome!  Feel better!

Does Music Make YOUR Brain Sing?

The brain is still very much an unexplored frontier. At least, itís a complex and mysterious frontier. Neuroscientist have come a long way in the past couple of decades, but there is still so much that we donít understand because of the brainís complexity. The interface of genetics, DNA, and neuroscience is a delicious place to go, but itís not the top priority in medicine these days. Finding a cure for cancer, Alzheimerís, and autism are probably higher priority, but interestingly, music can be extremely therapeutic for all of those diseases.

Music is one of the easiest ways a person can feel better if theyíre feeling down emotionally, or ill physically. This article appeared recently in the New York Times and I think Youíll find it fascinating!

"It was the easiest of all hand surgeries! I was listening to music, then a slight lull of nothing and then back to the music. Wonderfully comfortable. The best surgical experience yet. I am honored to know, worked with and utilized Dr. Cash's magnificent creation. I do hope the medical field understands the import of her invention!"
