"Using Music in the Hospital"

Dr. Alice H. Cash is often asked to share her
Grand Rounds Presentation with hospitals' doctors and staff.  Learn what is currently happening around the world and the results they are having.

"It was the easiest of all hand surgeries! I was listening to music, then a slight lull of nothing and then back to the music. Wonderfully comfortable. The best surgical experience yet. I am honored to know, worked with and utilized Dr. Cash's magnificent creation. I do hope the medical field understands the import of her invention!"

Music Medicine in Spring of 2012 is bringing exciting research and advances

You may have noticed that you haven't received a Healing Music Ezine for the last few months.  That's because there has been such an explosion of activity here at Healing Music Enterprises and Surgical Serenity Headphones that getting out the ezine had to go on the back burner.  We apologize and hope that you survived this lapse with what you've learned through the years.

Our main focus for the past year or so has been the Surgical Serenity Headphones, but I still do work in the areas of Music with Alzheimer's and Dementia, as well as The Lullaby Project, music with pregnancy, preemies and newborns.  My CD's, downloads, and classes remain  staples in this business and I'd love to create more of each.  Do let me know what you would like to see in the way of new products related to healing with music!

In March of 2012, I decided to go to a big conference in New Orleans that is entirely focused on surgery and operating room equipment.  This was the Association of Operating Room Nurses and in the exhibit hall were literally 100's of exhibitors that sell materials and equipment to hospitals.  New Orleans was bustling with preparations for the Final Four Basketball Tournament (which Kentucky subsequently won!) and I hopped on a plane, loaded down with headphones!  Over the next couple of days I showed the headphones to manufacturers and distributors from around the country and every single person said they thought it was a great idea and they would love to help me get them out there!  Needless to say, I was quite ecstatic!

Can music prevent organ rejection?

New research published in BioMed Centralís open access journal Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery demonstrates that music can reduce rejection of heart transplants in mice by influencing the immune system.

The link between the immune system and brain function is not clearly understood, nevertheless music is used clinically to reduce anxiety after heart attack, or to reduce pain and nausea during bone marrow transplantation. There is some evidence that music may act via the parasympathetic nervous system, which regulates the bodily functions that we have no conscious control over, including digestion.

Why do you need headphones and music during surgery?

Having surgery is a dangerous thing, but sometimes not having surgery is more dangerous. If youíve been told that you need to have surgery, there are certain risks you will want to be aware of:

Anesthesia reactions:

Most problems that arise during surgery are the result of the surgery, not the sedation for the procedure. While uncommon, there are very serious complications that can occur if a patient has a reaction to the anesthesia drugs.

Most problems associated with anesthesia are related to the process of intubation, or inserting the breathing tube. Aspiration, or breathing food or fluid into the lungs, can be a problem, during surgery. Some patients also experience an increased heart rate or elevated blood pressure during the process.

Effects of Music on the Brain

It has long been obvious that music affects people profoundly. What is new, though, is that research is being conducted to determine the effects of music on the brain. Through this research much has been learned about the effects of music on brain function.

It has been shown over and over again that one of the strongest effects of music on the brain is in the area of memory. Students of foreign languages were shown to be able to learn hundreds of vocabulary items in one day when listening to appropriate music. What is more, they remembered the words over time at a level of 92% retention. This feat was accomplished with the use of baroque classical music. The tempo was the most successful at a steady rate of 60 beats per minute. At this tempo, people seemed to remember the most. This was one of the interesting effects of music on the brain.
