"Using Music in the Hospital"

Dr. Alice H. Cash is often asked to share her
Grand Rounds Presentation with hospitals' doctors and staff.  Learn what is currently happening around the world and the results they are having.

"It was the easiest of all hand surgeries! I was listening to music, then a slight lull of nothing and then back to the music. Wonderfully comfortable. The best surgical experience yet. I am honored to know, worked with and utilized Dr. Cash's magnificent creation. I do hope the medical field understands the import of her invention!"

Happy Birthday to  Healing Music Ezine!

We are so proud to be recognized because the Healing Music Enterprises E-magazine is celebrating 10 years of continuous publication!  Our ezine has been coming out monthly since 2001!  Our first issue appeared in July of 2001 and many of my readers tell me they had never seen an electronic magazine before and thought it was really wonderful!  At that time, my website had already been around for over two years and I noticed that online leaders in other fields such as business, medicine, fashion, etc, seemed to have their weekly or monthly online magazines.

The world was just barely beginning to understand about being "green" but I definitely recognized that more and more people were getting computers and going online and I knew none of us was ever going back!  I also knew that people could afford to subscribe to free ezines, whereas print magazines were getting more and more expensive and tended to stack up, unread on people's shelves.

At the suggestion of my first webmistress, June Kaminski, RN, I decided to keep an archive of each issue, that would be forever available for review and for research.  This archive is available for YOU at Healing Music Ezine Archive.  Early issues focused on topics such as "ear worms," "movie music" and "music for pregnancy and preemies."  Reading through the archives is like reading a history of Healing Music Enterprises and you can follow along as I created each product and travelled around the world, teaching people about the fantastic healing power of music!

I hope you'll take some time over the next month and issue some of 100+ back issues!

Brain Tumor Surgery:  Awake and Using Music!

Written by Jeannine Walston, click here.

Jeannine Walston is co-founder and Executive Director of EmbodiWorks, a non-profit organization providing integrative cancer care resources about body, mind and spirit, including social and environmental health. She has extensive experience in cancer education and advocacy, health care policy, and both conventional and integrative cancer.

An interesting article came my way today, written by a man who had undergone his second awake, brain tumor surgery! In this article he talks about all of the things that helped him and can help YOU, including music! Enjoy!

The anesthesiologist grabbed my hand as I woke up in the room. As I embraced her touch, my head was locked into metal equipment even when I could move other parts of my body. But I wasn’t supposed to. Standing behind me, my neurosurgeon reminded me not to try moving my head. With his hands in my brain, his touch worked to save my life.

Sometimes life makes people return to difficult places and experiences for survival. For me, that includes my second awake brain surgery in September 2011. My first brain surgery in 1998 and recovery was completely new to me. Since then, I have come to understand some essential health and healing components needed when dealing with cancer. Cancer care cannot only address the cancer diagnosis and instead must support the whole person.

Getting Surgery Headphones into YOUR hospitals

Imagine that you've just been told that you need to have surgery.  It could be a joint replacement surgery (very commonly done with us baby boomers!), a heart surgery for bypass or pacemaker implantation, a C-section, or even some cosmetic procedures.  What ever surgery you have, it is always a BIG DEAL!  Surgery is a fear-inducing prospect but there are many things that you can do to help yourself.  One thing is to use music during your procedure.

Eventually, we hope and predict that the Surgical Serenity Headphones will be in every hospitals, large or small, in every country, large or small.  Right now they are in a few big hospitals:  Mayo Clinic has some; so does the Cleveland Clinic and many, many smaller hospitals.  If YOU want to make sure that you or your loved one has the Surgical Serenity Headphones, the best thing you can do is to purchase them yourself as soon as you get the news, and let us send you the clinical documentation that your doctors will want to see, letting them know that music has been studied, researched, and found to be extremely valuable for the patient, the doctor, and the hospital.

For the patient, there will be:

  • less anxiety medication because patient is already calm from listening to the slow, steady music before surgery

  • less anesthesia because patient is put to sleep easily as a direct result of already being relaxed by music while waiting for surgery to begin

  • less pain medication in the recovery area, because their bodies remain relaxed by the music that continues into recovery area and changes character to become gradually more upbeat and bring them to consciousness slowly and gently with music.

For the doctor, there will be:

  • a safer procedure from start to finish because of less medication throughout the entire procedure

  • a happier and calmer patient because they did not hear the un-nerving sounds of surgery or "accidentally overheard" conversations of medical staff.

For the hospital, there will be:

  • more patients processed through the surgical suite as a result of fewer complications, less sedated patients, and

  • fewer lawsuits as a result of greatly increased patient satisfaction

Although our Surgical Serenity Headphones, cannot be put on sale, there is a reduction for individuals purchasing more than one set at a time.

Which Hospitals in the U.S. are using Surgical Serenity Headphones?

This is a question that I get more and more these days. As people around the country and around the world, find out about our ready-to-go, pre-programmed surgical headphones, they want to know that the research is there and that nationally-known, reputable hospitals are already using them.

Well, good news! They are already being used at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and the Cleveland Clinic in both Ohio and Florida. Individuals have purchased them and used them here in Louisville, KY at Baptist Hospital East, Jewish Hospital and Norton Hospital downtown as well as Norton Suburban Hospital. They’ve been used at hospitals in New York City, Greenville, S.C., Spartanburg, S.C., Birmingham, AL, Houston, TX, San Francisco, CA and in Canada, Hawaii and London.

Several patients were afraid that they would not be able to wear them into surgery, but only two people nationwide were told that they could not take them into surgery. These patients both concluded simply that it had not been done before and that the surgeon or anesthesiologist did not want to try it. No medical or safety precaution could be cited.

To date, all patients who actually used the music before, during, and after their surgery have reported that they will never have surgery again without using their headphones and music. Patients have said that they drift off to sleep feeling as though they’re at the beach, listening to favorite music through headphones and totally forget that they’re in a hospital about to have surgery. Needless to say, when patients are not tensed up and rigid with fear and anticipation, the procedure goes better: less anxiety meds, less anesthesia, less pain medication = faster and safer procedure and recovery! Who could argue with that?
