Music Medicine and Music Healing
One of the most frequent questions I get has to do with the differences between music healing, music medicine, music therapy and sound healing. Although they are all similar in intent and practice, each one is a little different...and let me rush to say that my definitions of these practices won't necessarily be the same as another person's definitions. Anyway, here we go:
Music healing: the use of music, preferably live music but also recorded music, to decrease symptoms of physical, emotional and spiritual pain. This music can be presented by a practitioner but could also be self-administered, i.e., when I'm feeling sad, fearful or angry, I go to the piano and play favorite comforting music for myself. It could be Bach, Mozart, hymns, Christmas carols or anything that I've known and loved for a long time. When I do this for someone else, I rely on them to tell me what music is meaningful and comforting to them.
Music Medicine: this is probably a little more technical and a little more specific. I think of music medicine when I work with specific illnesses or health crises like Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, surgery preparation or working with preemies. A little deeper knowledge of music and how it affects the mind and the body is required.
Music Therapy: the work done by music therapist is very specific and one can actually earn a degree in music therapy. Music therapists work with many of the same populations as music medicine practitioners and they also often conduct research in these areas. Music therapists are often employed by healthcare facilities and work with hospitals, rehabilitation centers and nursing homes.
Sound Healing: Also known as vibrational healing, sound healing focuses a lot on the healing effect of specific vibrations on the body. Drumming, toning, and crystal bowls would be examples of the use of sound and vibrations to bring about healing, or a decrease of symptoms in the mind, body, and spirit.
Of all the things I have researched and learned about in this exciting field of music medicine, the music for surgery is the most exciting for me because I have been able to get a patent and create something that did not exist previously. Still, I know that not everyone is anticipating surgery anytime soon and so I don't want to bore you with info each month on the surgery headphones.
As a result of my deep interest in these topics and as a result of being a life-long musician and performer, I have created CD's, downloads, and courses in the following areas. I also now have a Christmas CD that includes all my own favorite Christmas music. To see these products, go to www.HealingMusicEnterprises.com/products.html. In a few weeks I will send out a special downloadable package offer that will included a sampling of all my products at a greatly reduced price.
If there is something specific that YOU would like for me to included in this package, let me know now!
Headphones or Music
There are two primary ways that you can
experience music during surgery right now: I'm offering the wireless,
cordless headphones online that are pre-programmed with my scientifically
chosen, patented music OR you can purchase just a download of the music
for half the price! Just last week, as woman from Australia
downloaded the music and had this to say:
I've come full circle!
A few nights ago I had a once in a lifetime experience. The dear man who has been my mentor in the field of music medicine for twenty years now, was in the hospital recovering from an emergency appendectomy, and I was able to deliver him a set of my surgery headphones to use during his recovery! If it were not for Dr. Arthur Harvey, these headphones would not exist and now, he got to benefit from them!
Dr. Harvey reported that the quality of music was "amazing" and as I
stood there talking with his son, Dr. Harvey was smiling and singing
along with the favorite hymns I had put on just for him! Needless to
say I am thrilled to be able to help the man who is responsible for my
being where I am in this wonderful profession and am trusting that he
will continue to recover and maybe do so faster and with less pain,
thanks to the music he taught me about long ago!
