I. What do you know about chant?

Last week-end I had the opportunity to hear a wonderful, spiritual man from India, give a lecture on the healing power of sound and specifically, chant. While his focus was primarily on Hindu chant, he acknowledged that most religions have chant of some sort. Chant is a pathway to the spirit realm and when one chants, he is likely to enter an altered state in a matter of minutes. What’s good about an altered state? When people are in altered states their subconscious is more easily accessed. Most chants have positive, oftentimes spiritual words. When people chant together, they affirm a belief, usually positive and usually empowering. When people chant alone the same thing happens. Robert Ornstein in his book, The Psychology of Consciousness, states, "if awareness is restricted to one unchanging source of stimulation, a turning off of consciousness of the external world follows."

What qualifies as a chant? Chants in our time can be spiritual, political, even sports-oriented. A political chant; think “We Shall Overcome.” This is a chant that finally led to powerful social change. Millions of people still remember it and are moved by it. At sporting events, people chant to empower the team as well as themselves and those around them, so chants can be entirely secular. Chants, by definition, tend to be repetitive and rhythmic; they use melodies with a narrow range so that most people can sing them fairly easily. In our part of the world, the most familiar sacred chant is probably Gregorian chant, but native American chant is a close second. In one case, sports and Native American combine; think Atlanta Braves or Florida State Seminoles.

Is any one chant superior over another? No. Not any more than one religion is better than another or one author or composer greater than another. They are all effective and are typically chosen dependent upon an individual’s culture and part of the world they grow up in. Our guru on chant grew up in a village in India and performed his native chant beautifully. I can imagine that a non-religious person could be converted by a chant as beautiful as what we heard last week-end. But we don’t have to learn Hindu chant to be powerfully affected; even transformed by chant. As with most music, the music one grows up with and prefers is usually what one responds to best, in terms of healing effects.

Interested in learning some chants? I have a tape (or CD) for sale that contains a dozen or more chants of various types and instruction and practice on each of them, alone and in a group. This recording is from a live workshop I did a few years ago and has been popular with individuals suffering from anxiety, depression and addictions. Please purchase this tape from the website store. As always, I’m very interested to hear your stories, experiences, or questions related to chant. Don’t ignore this ancient form of healing and empowering yourself and others.

II. How’s Your Memory?

It’s a well-known fact that many humans experience some memory loss as they grow older. It’s not an inevitable result of aging but, especially in people who are not well, don’t exercise enough, and have poor nutrition, memory tends to get fuzzy. Alzheimer’s disease is a totally different situation. It can strike people who have taken care of themselves and had good nutrition and exercised. One of the things that can help both situations, however is music! As a matter of fact, music with memory loss is one of the most researched areas of modern music medicine.
Click here to see some of the research.

In 1992-93 I did a study here at the U of L Medical School on “The Therapeutic Use of Music with Alzheimer’s Patients.” What we found was that even after a person has no cognitive awareness of time, place, self, or family members, they can still hear familiar music from their courting years and remember it, sometimes sing along with it, and briefly experience pleasure and memories. It’s what we call a “quality of life intervention” but it is powerful and it’s free!

For the next month, I’m offering my new CD, “Music for Memory Care” for 10% off for two or more, 20% off for 5 or more and 40% off for 10 or more! You don’t have to have memory problems to enjoy this beautiful music of the 1900’s-1950’s. The music is played on grand piano by yours truly! This would make a wonderful Christmas present for anyone age 69-109. Get your order in soon though because the inventory is already going fast!

"Dr. Cash kept my interest through-out the whole session. I am a 60 year old MeMaw that is raising my grandson. He is seven and has had a lot of turmoil in his life already. I decided that I was not going to put him on drugs and every time I hear about an alternative method of helping him, I jump to it. Dr Cash explained methods of using music that I can use with my grandson along with the healing work I do. I am a Reiki Master and a Spiritualist Minister. Saturday, I became aware of a lot of new ways I can use music in my spiritual work. Thank you for making this class available."
