How to Use Wireless
Headphones for Surgery
For over fifty years, surgeons have been using music in the
operating room. This is not widely know however and when most people are
informed that they will be needing to have surgery, using music is not the first
thing that comes to mind.
In the last decade there have been dozens of articles online and in newspapers,
magazines and journals talking about the use of music during surgery and
especially talking about people bringing their iPods into surgery. There has
also been quite a bit of news about the doctors themselves playing music during
surgery. Don Campbell's famous book, "The Mozart Effect" attributes "surgeons
toting boom-boxes into surgery" to my lectures and ezines.
The fields of music therapy, holistic nursing, anesthesiology and others have
contributed ample research documenting that when people listen to slow, steady,
soothing music during surgery, the overall outcome is probably going to be
enhanced. Some of the benefits can be:
- stabilized blood pressure
- stabilized heart rate
- stabilized body temperature
Resulting in:
- less anesthesia required to keep patient asleep
- less anxiety medication because patient is calmed by favorite music
- less pain medication required in recovery because favorite music is releasing
endorphins and dopamine.
Of course we all know that new ideas inevitably go through four stages:
1. ridicule
2. some acceptance
3. widespread acceptance
4. treated as the norm
We are probably at Stage 2 with this idea. How do we get it to Stage 3? Just
think about your own reaction to calming or energizing favorite music and, while
you're listening, ask yourself "would I enjoy hearing this through my iPod or
some cordless headphones during surgery? If your answer is yes, then I encourage
you to get your headphones, iPod or playlist ready now.
As always, please feel free to contact me if I can help you in any way.
