Rev. Dr. M.B. Hudnall, Clemson
The Rev. Dr. M.B. (Michael Benjamin) Hudnall died at his home, 203 Wyatt Ave. in Clemson on Dec. 14, 1999.

 

The Rev. Dr. Hudnall was a United Methodist Minister, retired, of the South Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. He was born in Clarendon County, Aug. 3, 1921, the son of An nie White and Mi chael Benjamin Hudnall Sr.

Dr. Hudnall was a graduate from Sumter High School in 1938, Clemson University, (the Clemson College) in 1943. He receive a Master of Divinity degree from Duke University Divinity School in 1949 and was awarded a Doctor of Divinity Degree from Wofford College.

During World War II, Rev. Hudnall served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Infantry in the European Theater where he participated in the Battle of the Bulge and received the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star, and Combat Infantry Badge. He also served as a Military Intelligence Officer in Prisoner of War camps.

Rev. Hudnall's ministry included appointments at Buncombe Street United Methodist Church (associated) Greenville, Slater and Renfrew United Methodist Church, Simpsonville, Clemson United Methodist Church, Saint Paul United Methodist Church, Greenville, Saint John United Methodist Church, Aiken, Central United Methodist Church, Spartanburg, District Superintendent of the Florence District of the South Carolina Conference, and Central United Methodist Church, Newberry. He retired after serving Saint Mark United Methodist Church in Seneca and in retirement was Director of Evangelism for Clemson United Methodist Church in Clemson. Dr. Hudnall was licensed to preach in October 1947, his ministry spanning 52 years.

As an active member of the South Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, Dr. Hudnall was a trustee of Wofford College and trustee of the Greenwood Methodist Home. He served as chairman of the conference Board of Global Ministries and Church Extension, Chairman of the Board of Ministerial Training and Qualifications and Chairman of the Joint Review Committee. At Clemson College, he was President of the Wesley Foundation, Methodist student organization, which remained a lifelong interest.

Rev. Hudnall is the recipient of the 1978 Distinguished Service Award from Clemson University, was President of the Duke University Divinity School Alumni Association in 1980-81, and received the volunteer award of the South Carolina Department of Education for "Outstanding contribution to Public Schools" in 1988. His family was named South Carolina Family of the Year in 1990. He was named Minister Emeritus of Clemson United Methodist Church in 1995.

He is survived by his wife, the former Alice Adelaide Adams of Seneca; daughters, Dr. Alice H. Cash of Louisville, Ky., Miss Norma Anne Hudnall of Spartanburg, Mrs. Nancy H. Waters of Anderson, Miss Catherine Ruth Hudnall of Atlanta; a son, Dr. M.B. Hudnall Jr. of Greensboro, N.C.; and six grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Mr. John H. Hudnall of Sumter; and a sister, Mrs. Clara H. Waters of Sumter. A brother, James M. Hudnall is deceased.

Funeral services will be held at Clemson United Methodist Church on Friday, Dec. 17th at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery in Seneca. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home in Central. Ministers of the South Carolina Conference United Methodist Church will be honorary pallbearers.
